Thanks to Hollywood blockbuster movies, the concept of card counting is viewed as some kind of magical superpower. Most people believe that to beat the casino, you must be an autistic savant capable of instantly memorizing every single card in a six-deck casino shoe. This could not be further from the truth. Real, professional card counting is not about memorizing suits or ranks. It is actually a basic running mathematical tally that tracks the ratio of cards to gauge the mathematical edge. Let's break down exactly how card counters use simple math to crush the casino.


Assigning the Values: High Cards vs Low Cards


The most famous card counting strategy in the world is the classic Hi-Lo method. Under this strategy, you do not remember specific suits; they group the cards into three categories to every card that comes out of the dealer's shoe. The low numbers help the casino make hands, so when they are dealt and removed from the deck, the player adds +1 to the count. The big cards (Tens and Aces) are heavily favorable to the player, so when they are dealt, the player subtracts 1. The cards 7, 8, and 9 have very little impact on the math, so they are assigned a value of exactly zero (0) and are completely ignored.


Adjusting for the Shoe: Doing the Division


As the hand progresses, the player constantly updates this simple addition and subtraction in their brain, known as the Running Count. If the table is full of low cards, the count goes way up.
